Putting

Putting is the final and last part of the short game. It is also one of the most difficult part, and is probably the part that will drive you the most mental. So please visit my post about the mental game if you have any questions about that.

I also have several different posts on the following: Pitching, Chipping, and Bunker Shots if you need help on any these parts of the games.

Alright now to the putting. There are two things you need to focus on in putting and those two things are: Distance and Direction.

Distance is the area you have between you and the hole.
Direction is the way you want to hit the ball.

Pretty simple right? But somehow it is so difficult.

Here I’m not going to focus a lot on technique or anything like that. What my main purpose here to do is to get you where you will be able to gain touch, and get your putts closer to the hole for a closer 2nd putt and have more one putts.

Because you won’t be able to one putt if you leave the ball short or kill it to far by. Not only will you be able to start one putting more often, but you’ll start to see you are rarely three putting. One way to do this is to just roll the ball towards the hole.

Have you ever had someone ask you toss them their keys, wallet, water bottle, or just anything? Did you just stand there and take some practice throws and thinking to yourself “Alright, I have to take my arm this far back with this much strength.”

NO! Or I sure hope not. :)

You most likely just looked at him or her and threw whatever it was and the distance was perfect. I don’t want to hear this crap about how you don’t have distance control, or any touch. Because you just proved that you do. It’s just we are overthinking, and it is killing us.

We are all born with this natural touch, some more than others, but we all have enough of a natural touch to succeed at being a great putter.

What I want you to do, is to just practice kneeling on the green rolling some balls at the hole. Don’t think, just look at the hole and roll.

After that I want you to start putting while looking at the hole. When you read the green and decide this is where you want the ball to start slowing down.

Make some practice swings looking at that spot, not worrying about distance, and then walk up to the putt and give it a stroke. Don’t worry about technique. You can even putt while looking at the spot.

Don’t worry you won’t mess it up. It will actually help you so much with your putting, so just give it a chance.
